The Right to Remain Unvaccinated?

Yet another wave of COVID-19 is slamming into Europe.

“The spread of the more infectious Delta variant, an increase in communal activity, a return to the workplace and a sluggish rollout of booster vaccines, which are recommended six months after the second jab, have been blamed for the increase in infections.”

No wonder then that patience among the vaccinated majority wrt the unvaccinated “holdouts” has begun to run thin.

 

In Austria, for example, 65% are vaccinated. Until recently, the unvaccinated weren’t allowed into restaurants and cinemas. Now they won’t be allowed to step out of their homes. Except to go to work or buying food. Huh? Won’t every unvaccinated person who gets “caught” outside claim he was going for one of those activities?! In any case, protestors say such moves are unconstitutional, and there are placards saying, “Our bodies, our freedom to decide”.

 

Germany’s vaccination rate is practically the same as Austria, at 67%. As cases spike, their situation is made worse by the fact they have a caretaker government:

“Management of the pandemic appears to have lost direction.”

The few actions taken are by individual states e.g. states where COVID patients take up as much as 85% of ICU beds have issued rules to prevent the unvaccinated from entering “all non-essential shops and facilities”. Germany made things worse by closing vaccine centers in many places after summer.

 

Latvia, with 59% vaccinated, has prevented unvaccinated politicians from “voting on laws and taking part in debates”. Their pay will also be cut.

 

Eric Topol scathingly says America will almost certainly get hit next. Why? It’s their track record:

“The pandemic first hit Europe in March 2020, and Americans were in denial, thinking it wouldn’t happen here. Then, later in the year, the Alpha variant wave took hold in the United Kingdom and the United States was unprepared. This recurred with Delta in the summer of 2021.”

Live and don’t learn...

 

It's sad that while the West has so many people who won’t get vaccinated, Africa has such a large fraction that can’t get vaccinated.

Why we Deceive Ourselves

In their book, The Elephant in the Brain , the authors describe this weird aspect of deception that we practice: deceiving ourselves! That is so weird: “If our minds contain maps of our worlds, what good comes from having an inaccurate version of these maps?” The Sigmund Freud school of thought treats self-deception as a defense mechanism, “a way for the ego to protect itself”. The mind seeks to protect itself from anxiety and other negative emotions. Many object to this reasoning: since accurate information is so critical to our survival, surely distorting information would be dangerous. Wouldn’t the goal of protecting our self-esteem have been better achieved by making the brain’s self-esteem mechanism stronger instead? The new school of thought explains self-deception as “primarily outward-facing, manipulative, and ultimately self-serving”. Handling of the Satyam Scam

The Satyam scam. How does that fit into Montek Singh Ahluwalia’s book on reforms in India, Backstage ? The reason is that, as both NASSCOM and the government of India felt: “(Satyam’s) collapse would create a great deal of disruption for clients worldwide and seriously damage India’s reputation as a reliable source of software services.”   Therefore, the government decided to work with the private sector to “organize a quick takeover by a reputable new buyer, who would quickly restart the company”. But that could not be done overnight. In the meantime, the new board would have to reach out to Satyam’s clients and “reassure them that the company would survive”.   For the new board to have credibility when it made that statement, it had to be staffed with people who understood the private sector, the IT sector in particular, and commanded respect and trust.
