Work-Life Balance?

At a company training long back, a guest speaker said he didn’t believe that work-life balance was ever possible. He felt it was always a work-life choice. You could pick one or the other, not both.

That was contrary to I had heard until then. And yet it felt true. We rarely feel that we gave both sides adequate time. Shouldn’t that be true of most others? Or did the others somehow do justice to both?

And then I found the “evidence” to prove that speaker right: Spiderman. He misses on his dates with MJ because he is busy saving the world. All the other superheroes seem to be able to strike a perfect work-life balance! Not Spidy. He’s like most of us. He tries to do justice to both…but doesn’t succeed.

If a superhero can’t pull it off, what chance do we mere mortals have?

As a toddler, my daughter loved Alia Bhatt’s songs, esp. the ones from Student of the Year . (That movie did have many good songs and well-choreographed dances). Fast forward to present day, when she is 12 yo. The Retort of the "Luxury Person"

Coming up with biting and witty retorts. It’s something we dream of, but rarely manage to pull off. Worse, the more we stew over the offending remark, the more likely we are to come up with that dream retort, as Calvin ruefully points out: During our last holiday at the Taj Resort, seeing my wife carrying towels to our poolside chairs, one of the kids there mistook her for a member of the staff and asked for a towel. When my wife narrated this to us, I did not imagine that my 8 yo daughter would come up with her own retort.
